Walking in the Rain is a one-of-a-kind shirt featuring Japanese fabric appliqué and hand-stitched Sashiko.
The fabric features traditional Japanese wagasa umbrellas, their radiating spokes creating a rhythmic geometric pattern around the pocket. Below, two hand-stitched floral Sashiko motifs add a quiet counterpoint – flowers blooming while the umbrellas are open.
A piece inspired by those days when there is no reason to wait for the rain to stop – you simply keep walking.
The Salt Spray Series began with a pair of well-worn pajama pants printed with the iconic Great Wave. They had reached the end of their life as clothing and were headed for the landfill – but parts of the fabric were still strong and beautiful.
We carefully cut away the sections worth saving and used them to create a small series of one-of-a-kind shirts, combining the rescued wave fabric with hand stitching, patches, and sashiko details.
What was worn out became something new ✦ A second life, carried in from the sea.
